Hello there. I have a really anoying problem. When I click on a link to download a file (ie google earth) It will not start, If I then click the link "click here if download does not start automatically" my browser just freezes up and I have to close it via task manager. The problem started after a very helpfull brother inlaw (who is a programe developer) Tried to sort some slow running problems out for me using "Hijackthis" He thinks he may have deleted somthing that he shouldn't have (you don't say) But now he's too bussy at work. I also get an error message "C:\WINDOS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windos applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application." This message comes up when my Daughter tries to use her "Micky Saves the Day" CD that came free with the Daily Mail. The 2 errors started exactly at the same time. I'm running xp pro and ie7 I have every update poss from Microsoft. Theres another thing since our P**L messed with my pc I can't use the validation thing in windos update by right clicking on the bar at the top of the page and clicking on install active x control. it doesn't work now. I have to use the link at the bottom of the page. Please can you help I hope its just somthing simple. Oh and no he didn't create a restore point!! Thanks for any help received Manix666.

Hi, Can you see if Hijackthis is still on the computer, and if it is, when you view the Hijackthis folder in Windows Explorer> does it have a folder called Backups there?

The folder may be in Program Files, or not, depends on what type of Hijackthis he downloaded and where he saved it to. (And how he used Hijackthis).

You can use Search> All Files and Folders> type in hijackthis.exe and see where it is located. Look also for the Backups folder, because it does save copies of what is removed after each use and we may be able to put back what was taken out by mistake.

I found the Folder with highjack in it. Looks like he ran it from the desktop .zip folder as windows can't find it anywhere else on the machine and when you open it again it warns that it should be copied to the progames folder other wise back ups will be lost ??

Hi,, Was worth a try, but Hijackthis does not create the backups right, if you run it from the temp or just unzip it and run...
So, no backups were stored it seems.

I think you are meaning the yellow Information Bar that pops up when you have to Allow a download, or ActiveX control....that is part of the XP Service Pack 2 install and the XP Security Center.

If Internet Explorer is messed sometimes a user is able to install Firefox browser and use that for access in the meantime....

Could you download it on another pc, and burn it to a CD and install it? Do you feel like trying? It's almost impossible to do anything else- you have to somehow get things installed, fixes or programs...to repair IE onthe bad machine.

How about a USB flash drive, does anyone have one of those near you?

let me know if you need the location for Firefox and some directions, but it's really quite easy.
