Can a Prepay Cell Phone be used as a GPS

556 Views 11 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  AlbinaStrosin
I have an AT&T prepay Cell Phone without data service.
It does have text messaging & voice.

I use a smart phone with this AT&T service.

Can the smart phone be used as a GPS in car or for hiking
or does it need constant internet connection?

Thank you,

I don't know about all prepaid phones but Android and iPhone smart phones now all have integral GPS capability. Google Maps and National Forest Service interactive maps can show you where you are without an internet or phone connection. I have a demo Kyocera that my brother gave me to fly a toy drone. It's never had a phone plan but it tells me everywhere I am. I wish I'd have had that easy location access when I was doing field research back in the 80s and 90s but civilian GPS units were way too expensive for me to afford back then. I determined my location the old fashioned way, with map and compass and Geodetic Survey markers.

It would be nice to know how to use a map and compress when hiking but I think the electronic GPS works
well when driving a car. With the Tom Toms, Garmins etc.you do not have to subscribe to a service to use them but I
don't know if a smart phone that is not connected to a phone service or constant internet service can be used as as a GPS. Any answers on that?

Thank you,
If you you have for instance Google maps and you download the map for an area when ONLINE
then you can access the map - OFFLINE and use the GPS
with the map
I do it regularly on my tablet, in the car with a dashmount and no internet connection
I also use a similar system on a larger tablet on my boat as a back up navigator but that is not Google maps, but marine charts

I am sure you can do the same on a smartphone
However it does require an inbuilt satellite GPS system

You would have to make due enquiry to see if your smartphone model has inbuilt GPS

I thought that my collleague MPR had answered that

The phone I have is a Motorola AT&T smart phone. I wonder if it has enough memory to hold google/park maps & how
can I activate GPS & load the google & maps. It does not show a model number on the outside of the phone.
Would my phone have enough memory to do this?
My Forest Service map and app take up 126 MB.

It all depends on your specific device though.

Ok

It is a Moto e5 play, Android 8,00 with 2G Ram & 16G Rom.
As said it is not an expensive phone.

Would it work using it as a GPS?

Thank yoy,
According to Motorola support:

moto e5 play - Specifications
Location services
GPS, A-GPS, GLONASS

So it appears that my phone has a gps locator in it.

So I would I have to load an app for the maps?
What app would be good?

That I don't know. I got my map from an app linked by the National Forest Service for my county. It was through Avenza maps. It's not fancy, only showing the boundaries and roads, but it was free and suits my needs.
I would think I would have to download the maps when I am in a hotspot with internet access.
Then I would need to turn on the GPS feature of the phone.

Maybe there is an app that loads the maps but I don't know what it is and the procedure
to download it on a phone.

Thank you,
Yes, a prepaid cell phone can be used as a GPS if it has a GPS receiver and the appropriate software installed. The GPS receiver can be either built-in or an external device. The software can be any of the popular navigation programs like Google Maps or Apple Maps. To get the most accurate information, make sure to keep the GPS signal strong and the cell phone powered on. Additionally, some prepaid cell phone carriers may offer GPS services as part of their monthly plans.
