LiteOn makes a very good dvd burner. They make them for others too, and put the other company's name on them. You can get a dual format (+/-), double layer burner (internal) for under $100 now. They burn cds too. Depending on what you meant by backup, a seperate internal DVD Rom will make things a lot easier.............
These and quite a few other burners come with Nero 6 OEM Suite. Nero is MY preferred burning software.
Good luck!

If you have auto detect cable (right name?) no problem installing. If you have more than one drive, such as DVD Rom and DVD burner, I think the burner has to be the "Master". Instructions come with them.

I got my NEC 3520A dual layer burner for 50 bucks from newegg(OEM). Didn't get any software with it but i have found (as with other applications) that the best burning/backup/copy software is free.

BTW--16X DVD Burners are coming on the market--that's fast so you may want to wait if speed is important. There are also some drives here now:

Here is a double layer (writes twice as much) that writes at 16x (single layer only) and 4x double layer).

Hey Grip, that drive looks like a great deal (if you don't want or need the bundled software). Here is a review on it:
