My friends PC has been acting very strange recently, he is running windows XP - Home, when he is surfing the internet it randomly disconects and brings up internet pages over and over again that are blank, Sometimes it sets his homepage to 123.com.
Sometimes it brings up the following pages flingstone.com and clickspring.net.

He has run spybot several times and it never finds anything beyond the odd common cookie spyware files.

The quite large hijack this file is below, please tell me what he should remove. Thanks

Go to http://computercops.biz/downloads-cat-14.html , and download the latest version of CWShredder by Merijn Bellekom, the creator of Hijack This.
Run it, press 'Fix', and allow it to fix all it finds.
And remember to click "Fix" (Not "Scan only")
After its done its thing hit the"How do i prevent reinfection" tab....
In particular pay attention to the patches for the operating system regarding the ByteVerify vulnerability which is how you got infected in the 1st place.

When it is finished restart your computer.

Download AdAware 6 181 from here: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/
Before you scan with AdAware, check for updates of the reference file by using the "webupdate".
Then ........

Make sure the following settings are made and on -------"ON=GREEN"
From main window :Click "Start" then " Activate in-depth scan"

Then......

Click "Use custom scanning options>Customize" and have these options on: "Scan within archives" ,"Scan active processes","Scan registry", "Deep scan registry" ,"Scan my IE Favorites for banned URL" and "Scan my host-files"

Then.........

Go to settings(the gear on top of AdAware)>Tweak>Scanning engine and tick "Unload recognized processes during scanning" and "Let windows remove files in use at next reboot"

Then...... click "proceed" to save your settings.

Now to scan it´s just to click the "Scan" button.

When scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it.(Right-click the window and choose"select all" from the drop down menu)

Now re-boot...

Then
Download Spybot - Search & Destroy from http://security.kolla.de

After installing, first press Online, and search for, put a check mark at, and install all updates.
Next, close all Internet Explorer and OE windows, hit 'Check for Problems', and have SpyBot remove all it finds that is marked in RED

Run an online antivirus check from at least one and preferably 2 of the following sites....
http://security.symantec.com/default.asp?
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/
http://www.ravantivirus.com/scan/

Re-boot again.

Then post a new HijackThis log to check what is left.

And when this is all clean...
Consider installing the following:

SpywareBlaster v 3.0 and SpywareGuard v2.2, to prevent Active-X drive-by installations, as well as provide real-time browser hijacking protection: http://www.wilderssecurity.net/index.html

IE-SPYAD, a registry file that adds a long list of known "sites" to the Restricted Sites of your Internet Explorer: http://www.staff.uiuc.edu/~ehowes/resource.htm

;)

i posted about my friends pc the other day, his computer was quite infected and we managed to clear up a fair amount of stuff. I reposted his hijack this logfile as requested but no one replied and the post is pages into the forum now, so could someone please cheack over this log file and tell me how he can fix any remaining problems.

He ran adaware, spybot, 2 net virus checkers and used the CW shredder.

One problem he reports is that when he presses control+alt+Delete all the shows is the bottom frame with end task, switch too and new task.

Well the log is clean so I'm fairly certain it's not a trojan. Try right clicking on the taskbar and choose "Task Manager" to see if it will open that way.

OK I'm sorry I just went back and read the thread and I see that Task Manager is opening. It is just missing the tabs at the top. I thought it wasn't opening at all. There's nothing wrong. It just needs to be reset to show all the tabs. Just doubleclick on the outer frame of Task Manager and all the other tabs will become visible.

sorry i didnt explain the problem too well, then he presses control alt and delete the only think he sees is what is included in the attachment, it is asif the rest of the manager has dissapeared.
All that appears is that and where the process list is supposed to appear, there is nothing. it looks like the Task manager is only that bar :(

Thanks,
Iain :)

I've never seen that before. Are there any other problems with GUI's or displays?
