Hi for the last week or so i have been having problems on boot up of my windows xp home edition system.

When i start my pc it comes up with Boot failure Reboot and select proper boot device. Or insert boot media in selected boot device. Press any key when ready. For some reason on startup it does not find my hard drive.

Now i have noticed when it does this it trys to boot from floppy then cd rom then SCSI. Allthough i do not have a SCSI drive installed i have IDE.

I formatted the hard drive two days ago and reinstalled windows and everything was fine until today when the problems came back again. Please Help.

my son's floppy drive stopped working on his pc. He took it out of his pc and tried it in my pc to test it. It had a Windows me startup disk in the drive at the time, that he had forgot to take out.

Now there is no data left on the Win me startup disk and i know for fact that there was data on the disk.

I started having problems with my pc the following morning after he done this. So it looks it could be a Virus problem passed on through the floppy.

But i have formated the hard drive and reinstalled windows and my Virus software is up to date. Plus i have used various online virus scanners but no viruses have been found.

Is it possible do you think that it could be a MBR Virus that is going undetected by the Virus software. As my son has just informed me that the same thing happend to him that his pc could not find the hard drive the same identicle problem as me. He said he thought his hard drive and floppy had just gone wrong and replaced them. He has had no problems since he changed them. We are networked together via to NIC cards and crossover cable. PLEASE PLEASE HELP.

It definitely sounds like a virus or worm. You may even have gotten it from his computer over the network. I would reformat and reinstall xp. Also you may want to order the update disk from microsoft then you can install it before getting on the net or network. The link to order it is below. It is completely fre. They even pay shipping to mail to you.

Thanks for reply. I have all ready formatted and reinstalled windows xp. Plus my son's pc is fine now it is just mine with the problems. I would have thought his would have been infected again if mine is as we are still networked up.

Someone said it could be a problem with with the CMOS battery. But i am not sure because it happend to me and my son.

I am one baffled man at the moment.

the cost of a cmos battery is small. take it out and get a new one. It is surprising some of the problems they can cause.
