I have a Dell Inspiron 1000. When I turn it on I get the Dell screen and then it goes to the WindowsXP screen as it is starting up, and then nothing.
I can hear the startup sound but my screen remains blank.
Any help is appreciated.

Can you try Safe Mode, VGA mode, or Last Known Good from the Windows startup menu?

If so you can try adjusting the display settings or using System Restore.

Probably dead hard drive. Can you tap F8 after pressing power button and boot to safe mode?

Really, even though they can initially see the Windows logo and then hear Windows starting? At most the drive could be failing but its definitely not dead, and there's nothing to jump to that conclusion just yet.

When I boot into safe mode I get this message all the way down the screen:
"multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\windows\system32\drivers\" after this there are various different systems listed ie: NDIS.sys, fltmgr.sys,1394BUS.sys

Ok, most of that is normal except that it should continue and load into Windows.

Have you tried the Last Known Good from the menu?

Yes, and I've tried VGA Mode as well. It is all the same. Absolutely mind bogeling!

You should test the memory and hard drive.
