blank display after boot-up

The other day my son's computer would not boot properly. He gets the XP logo and it seems to boot fine, but there is NOTHING on the desktop except a black screen and the mouse pointer. ctrl-alt-del does nothing (I think the keyboard is dead too) and right clicking brings up nothing. He tried a repair installation and that didn't do anything. At one point we had gotten a STOP 7B message and re-installed the file that was called for but then reverted to the same problem. I have tried everything except a total re-format and clean install. I'm trying to salvage his files for college, that's why I'm hoping that someone can help me with a solution to this problem. BTW, I had a spare hard drive and we did a clean install on that drive and it works fine, so the hardware aspect of the system is OK. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Have you tried to boot into safe mode? Or you might try F8 at bootup and then select Last Known Good Configuration then enter. It seems to be a software problem so maybe either safe mode and system restore or LKGC might help.
Sorry, failed to mention that get the same thing in Safe mode, last know good doesn't cut it either.
