Belkin router not connecting online with Arris modem

4783 Views 14 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  plodr
I recently purchased an Arris Surfboard SB6121 to replace my rental modem with Cox. I have registered the modem and can connect online while hardwired but my Belkin N150 will not connect to provide wifi. I've spent 2 hours dealing with Belkin and Cox but Belkin's solution was to extend my warranty so they could help further... or just to buy a new router. The router still works with my old modem so there clearly is just some configuration that needs to be changed. I am not the most tech savvy person so I am lost. HELP!!!

Usually when you add a new router you want to leave both the cable modem and router unplugged for approx 15-20 minutes. Then connect and power on your modem. Once it is powered on for approx 5 min. Connect and power on your router. This should allow it to work.

If not, then you can try cloning your routers mac address as follows:

Do you power cycle the modem when switching the device connected to it? If so, have you tried a long interval, as suggested by Darrin above?

Was the rental modem a modem (only) or a modem/router combination unit?
Clarification: the Belkin router works if anything is hard wired to it; It doesn't work for wifi. Is that correct?

Here is the manual

The rental was just a modem, no router.

I didn't think to try otherwise, but no - no internet connection hardwired through the router either. The only way I can connect online is to plug the modem directly in to the computer.

Cloning did not correct this issue
How is the router connected to the modem?
Have you verified the router is obtaining a IP Address from your provider?
How do you have your router configured? Did you setup through an automated wizard or manually?
Can you access the router setup page to provide screenshots or details if needed?

Cox would not assist me very far as I am not a premium care subscriber and my Belkin warranty is expired (they want $30 to help further) so I do not know if the router is obtaining the IP address. The router was originally set up by a Cox tech and I have restored factory settings and attempted to connect using the wiazrd but no such luck. I can access the router set up page but it does look different from the version listed in the manual. I would be able to provide screenshots as needed.
Okay, first we need to make sure it is connected correctly.

Connect the Cable modem to the router's WAN or Internet port.

Sorry something came up and I can not help for a while.

Here is the manual that will walk you though it and I am sure someone can jump in if needed.

I have Comcast and I also bought the same modem you are now using, Motorola/Arris Surfboard SB6121.

I connected 2 different routers to the modem last year and had no problem getting online. (Linksys and Netgear)

It might be a good idea to reset your Belkin router. ( Since it works with the old modem, it isn't configured to work with the new one). There should be a reset button or something to press with a paperclip or pen on the back.

The default network ID and password information for your router can be found on the product label on the bottom of the Router. Use that information when you go to connect to a network.
You can change it after you have connected.

That's a new one for me. What router configuration depends on the cable modem to which it is connected?
If you don't turn off the router and simply connect it to a new modem you won't be able to get online. (I went through this last year when I replaced my modem from 2004).

He says it works with his old modem, which I find hard to believe, because once the cable company gets the MAC of the new modem, a signal won't be sent to the old modem so you should not be able to get online with the old and the new modem. (I've never tried using an old modem once I had the new one working).
