I've downloaded the latest version of Belarc Advisor and when I run it, it opens a file in IE7 (even though Firefox is set as my default browser), and the file is not in html, but rather the text of an html file.

That is odd because it has alway run in my default browser of netscape and now firefox and it is a .html file too.

You even have the same of that .html file when you run it saved in the C:\Program Files\Belarc\Advisor\System\tmp folder. It will be named what ever your computer name is.
So click on it to see how it opens.

Have you tried installing it again or uninstalling it and installing it again?
If you uninstall it I would clean up the things and make sure all get deleted from the C:\Program Files\Belarc folder.

Hi, It opens in an IE window, if you want to see it in .html code, at the top of the window select View>Source.

In Windows Explorer, you can go into the program Files folder Belarc> Advisor> System > tmp (and tpl) subfolders to see the various .html files making up the profile....the one with the computer name+.html in tmp
brings up the same page you see when you run belarc's shortcut from the tray or desktop icon.

you can also click on (computername)+.bci file in the Advisor subfolder, that opens the (saved, not a new) Profile too.

I can open Belarc in Firefox 2.0, from FF toolbar File>Open File> Program Files>Belarc>Advisor>computername.bci.......and, it displays in Internet Explorer window. The Open with box has "Run a DLL as an APP" (default) in it, so that's what I used....rundll32

Yes, it is odd. When I click on it in the tmp folder it opens fine (i.e., as an .html file) in Firefox. After uninstalling it and removing all instances of Belarc in the registry, then re-running it, the same thing happens, i.e., it opens in IE and in .html code, not as a .html file.

That is really odd then. I mean it's just a .html file. It opens ok if you open the tmp one but not when you run Belarc that made the file that your looking at in the tmp folder.

In the C:\Program Files\Belarc\Advisor folder there is a Install.log file so maybe that will help you clean up things.
Plus may be good to reboot after a uninstall and check again what needs cleaned up.

Ok I looked at the log and all seems to be installed in the same folder and doing a registry search of Belarc will find everything.

Not I have windows 98 so your may not be the same but at the bottim of the log was these listed and they are part of Belarc.

The Profile has the .bci extension...
(Computername).bci

The profile then is static, until you run Belarc again, to make a new profile which again saves as a .bci file. While you are open in Internet Explorer window, it does show the .html extension, which is why it is
confusing!

But, if you have Belarc open, hit Save As>Web Page .html Only in the File Type box, then it will save as an .html file which will open normally....I think that's what you are after.
Actually, it gives the .htm extension since it was not saved as a Web Page, Complete I think. Try it!

Note that when you have even the saved .htm file open, clicking the main "X" at the top of IE will want to close all IE windows....

Here are two screenshots of the icons, one is made as the .htm and one from the Program Files folder>Advisor>Profile with the .bci extension. Both are full profiles and both will open and be nicely readable in IE. I am using IE 7 with XP Home.
Using Yahoo Widgets Screen Shooter to make the images....

Yep, odd. I've uninstalled, cleaned all references out of the registry, cold booted and same problem persists (WinXP). Works fine in another computer.

Hi risman, Can you double click on the .bci profile and will it open IE and be readable as it should be?

The one in your Program Files>Belarc>Advisor ?

I tried your suggestion, but it still opens in .html code.

Hi, Then I suspect you may have the wrong Encoding setting in IE> though I am not sure that is the problem, it could be....

At the top of any IE window View> Western European Iso and Left to right doc is how mine shows....I have played around with those settings to adjust display of pages, but I dont recall it preventing anything from working right at all....so, can't say it would fix anything.

IE Tools>Internet Options>Programs, and also in Advanced.... restore defaults and Reset Web Settings, however this can change your Custom settings, so note what is there now so you can put it back if you wish or have special settings for something....

If this was already asked, sorry, but does any other .html or .htm file open with HTML coding, tags, etc?

< these things>> ? Are you using ver. 7 of Belarc Advisor or greater? Version 7.2a is newest I see.

If so, should not be any file association problem. But, there could be Folder Options being used that do not allow or affect Belarc. You can Restore Defaults for that in any Windows Explorer window, at the top, Tools> Folder Options>

Mine are: buttons ticked are> 1. Show common tasks in folders
2. Open each folder in same window
3. Double click to open
