Beeping boot problem on HP Pavillion

I have an intermittent failure to book. When this happens, the computer beeps constantly but does not turn on. If I turn off the back-up power and wait a few seconds, the computer boots OK when I turn it on. What is going on? Is this a serious problem? If so, how do I fix it?

I am using an HP Pavillion 8755c with Pentium III and 384 MB RAM. My OS is Windows XP Home Edition.

Dear Kiwi guy,

I really like Kiwis (the fruit and the people). Thanks for the reply. The beeps are regular and continuous. The Pavillion is model 8755c purchased in 2000.

Thanks to all for the ideas and advice! The next time it happens, I will count the number of beeps and their pattern. My impression is that they are steady, regular and continous.

Hi Folks,

The beeps during the boot fialure are a repeating series of one longish beep and two short ones. Any ideas, suggestions?
