Beeping boot problem on HP Pavillion

I have an intermittent failure to book. When this happens, the computer beeps constantly but does not turn on. If I turn off the back-up power and wait a few seconds, the computer boots OK when I turn it on. What is going on? Is this a serious problem? If so, how do I fix it?

I am using an HP Pavillion 8755c with Pentium III and 384 MB RAM. My OS is Windows XP Home Edition.

what kiwi meant was what is the beep pattern (i.e. 3 beeps and pause). if you can tell us about it we can most likely help you.
