I have an intermittent failure to book. When this happens, the computer beeps constantly but does not turn on. If I turn off the back-up power and wait a few seconds, the computer boots OK when I turn it on. What is going on? Is this a serious problem? If so, how do I fix it?

I am using an HP Pavillion 8755c with Pentium III and 384 MB RAM. My OS is Windows XP Home Edition.

THANKS!

The -exact- nature of the beep is a pointer to the problem.

Continuous single beep or a continuous string of short beeps or ... ?

It's the motherboard's way of communicating what is stopping it from beeping.

Model of Pavilion is?

Dear Kiwi guy,

I really like Kiwis (the fruit and the people). Thanks for the reply. The beeps are regular and continuous. The Pavillion is model 8755c purchased in 2000.

Best wishes, Gary

this sounds like a ram error to me. If it is just a continuous beep beep beep beep. if there is a string as said before that repeats it self it is a different problem probably. I suggest opening the case and try reseating the ram.

Thanks to all for the ideas and advice! The next time it happens, I will count the number of beeps and their pattern. My impression is that they are steady, regular and continous.

Just try to re-seat everything. Open the case, take out the RAM, put the RAM back in. Take out the video card (if it is in a slot and not on the mobo) and put it back in. Make sure they are seated securely and tightly. Turn on the PC.
