I have two computers with this problem. Different OS and different printer.

One is a Dell PC and its OS is Win XP Pro and has an Epson "cash receipts" printer hooked up to it, which is also a network printer. To work with our point of sale software, this printer has to be installed as a generic printer with special paper definition etc. I could add this printer as itself, but I am trying to keep things simple so when my successor (some day) comes, there are only those printers listed which are used (unlike when I came here on our former point of sale system). So, every time we boot into XP, it wants to install that printer. Is there a way to outsmart XP to not see this "uninstalled" printer, so it will not come up with the error message? It is a parallel cable hookup.

The other computer has Win XP Media Edition and is a fairly new Gateway laptop. They were unable to use their old printer, which only had a parallel port hook up on it (and a PS2 serial port). {If you know anyway different to have cabled the old one to USB, please tell me.}

So, they bought a new HP1510 3 in one printer. (I'm not sure if that is the model # or not.) I used the HP CD to install it and it came upon an error in the final steps of install, but it did finish and it did work.....after about three installs and restarts. Now, every time their computer starts up, XP finds that silly printer as a "new hardware" and wants to install it. Of course, this is hooked up through USB. How can I outsmart XP so it no longer sees that printer as new hardware, yet keeping it installed so it will print on it!

I have the Dell on site (at the store where I work) until 2 p.m today (Saturday, Dec. 23, 2006), however the Gateway laptop is 150 miles away from me.

Any suggestions?

Thank you,
Susan

Did you install the printer correctly?
Install software BEFORE switching on the printer.
You probably have more than one copy of the printer installed.
Go to control panel >printers & faxs and see how many are installed.
I would uninstall them all and start again
