I have had AVG for many years and I had a terrible time removing AVG in order to get the latest updates and still was unable to reinstall. I switched to Window Defender while all this was going on.

Question: Is Windows Defender an adequate substitute for AVG?

After you uninstall AVG, you need to use the AVG Remover tool so it can find and remove the leftover file and registry "debris".

If I haven't already told you and you're not aware of it, Windows Vista will be going "extinct" in a few months - just like Windows XP already has.

You appear to have a Dell Dimension 9200 or a Dell XPS 410 desktop.

I got AVG off and will keep Windows Defender as see how that works out.

I have a Dell DXP061 and may reluctantly upgrade to Windows 10.

Windows Defender in Vista is just a (lame) anti-spyware program. Microsoft Security Essentials is a good anti-virus for it (and is what is now called Windows Defender in Windows 8, 8.1 and 10).

I have a Dell DXP061 and may reluctantly upgrade to Windows 10.

It's my guess that Dell is too old to run Windows 10.
What's the "service tag" number and/or "express service code" number on it?

I got AVG off and will keep Windows Defender as see how that works out.

Terry is correct. The built-in Windows Defender app is NOT an antivirus program.
I also recommend installing and using Microsoft Security Essentials.
It's light-weight and very user-friendly.
