How do I know if I have the right system requirements for it? ( I know it's a really dumb question, but please be patient). And how do I know I really need it?

From what I understand, you should have Outlook Express 5.0 or higher and AVG anti-virus 6.0 or higher. In general it is my view that e-mail scanners are good to have as part of a security suite along with an anti virus program and good rules based firewall.

It would have been helpful if you had supplied details of your system

However, these are the only system requirements as specified by Grisoft:

System requirements

An installation of AVG Anti-Virus 6.0 update 404 or greater is required to proper functionality of AVG Personal E-Mail Scanner.
Mail Settings Import Wizard is implemented in the update 377 or greater.

The associated Help file does include configuration settings for Outlook EXpress 4x, 5x & 6x.

I have Windows 98 on a 486 Pentiom II Processor with 32 meg of RAM. The only thing I know about AVG is that it's version 6.0.654 and virus database 419. But I tried to configure my email client with it and it didn't work. My program (OE6) gave me a "connection....has been lost" message.

You are certainly running with a minimum of RAM but whether this has anything to do with your problem I don't know. Insofar as your copy of AVG is concerned, it conforms with the Grisoft's system requirements although the current version of AVG Free is 6.0.655 with the current database being #420 released on 8 April; suggest you consider updating.

If you have followed the Universal E-Mail Scanner's installation instructions, you will find an excellent Help file, Avgemc.help, in the Grisoft>AVG 6 folder in your Program Files Directory that includes a detailed explanation of how to configure both AVG & OE.

Also, the image in the attachment which I have included with this post, shows my AVG Control Center opened at the Mail Proxy page; on the right hand side of the pic. is a 'Configure' button that leads to Scanner Setup which incorporates a very helpful Setup Wizard.

Follow the help file instructions and the wizard and you should be right.
