I can get into thunderdird email client to send and receive from some accounts but when I click on the inbox of the account I use most, I get the message: "Authentication failure while connecting to server imap.gmail.com"".

When I click on try to send email, I get: "message could not be send because connection to outgoing server (smtp) timed out."

the following screen shot is from my the account settings:

same failure message.

I have gone to some YouTubes and to the thunderbird forum, etc. and all say it is an issue of matching the passwords of the emails (in the thunderbird account set up - example@gmail.com and the password of example@gmail.com, the email account itself). Problem is I don't know how to get to them to make them the same. As always thanks.

open screenshot with paint and use eraser on paint to redact addresses
HAVE you tried my suggestion

I would just remove the Gmail account and add it again in Thunderbird. Try this out and get back to us with the outcome so if the issue is still present, we can go from there.
Often re-adding an account to Thunderbird resolves the issue. That is for situations like this one. Since the password matches your account's password, the password can be ruled out as the issue here. That is my opinion.

Hi Nader,
Why do say the passwords match? I think they do not. But I don't know how to Are you sure that I can delete and reenter with a gmail account? I asked this before in #8:

Thanks for staying with this. I am paralyzed because of this snag.

IF

DO YOU not know for certain if they match
rather than as you say you think.

Please do not take that as any manner of sarcasm
If you had followed the advice in the link I sent to remove any saved passwords on Thunderbird and therefore had to type it in you would know for certain

IF they are different and by that I mean the password for gmail in thunderbird is not the same as the password for actual gmail then presumably you have set up an app specific password in gmail

I presume to can use GMAIL itself without problems
Gmail (google.com)

I was being helped with an email authentication issue by Couriant to whom I was passed by Macboatmaster. I could not proceed with Couriant's help because I had a paralyzing popup, so I started a separate thread to be able to follow the indications given to me.

Dr.M is helping me with the the popup issue. He was great and persistent, and I thought he was close to resolving the problem and that I was ready to continue with the first email issue but now I things have gotten worse with my email. I have lost the canoe and the paddle!

PLEASE DO NOT THINK THAT I HAVE NOT BEEN SERIOUS because I am returning to the authentication issue. It is that now I can't get to Dr.M's last instructions. I think that he has solved the popup issue and now I need to go back to my email woes. I am hoping that Couriant sees this and takes on his lost case again since we had started but I can't find this previous thread. I I am lucky enough to be helped again, I will repeat the info that I have given before. Thanks for any help.

Do you have any internet security suites like Norton? I wasn't fully watching your Malware thread so I am not sure what you have?

One thing that may be affecting the Outgoing E-Mail is a firewall or security suite by blocking it. Some updates can do that.

We need I think clarification on this
I did not report the most important detail in my previous post. I cannot send or receive email from my most important accounts.
1. Are they all gmail accounts
2. If NOT are they all accessed via thunderbird

3. Also for the gmail accounts on thunderbird I think you should try as I suggested on post 14 and also clarify if you do indded have an ap specific password for gmail on thunderbird - as you say the passwords do not match - eg your actual gmail password and your gmail password on thunderbird

4. The important point of post 14 is
I presume you can use GMAIL itself without problems
Gmail (google.com)
If you access it from here rather than via thunderbird

I'm back. Dr.M solved my pop up issue. I still have the email problem and continue to count on your kind help. I'll start with post 14 as you suggest.

  • I can send and receive OK with two gmail accounts
  • but I cannot send with a third for which the outgoing smtp.gmail always fails, although I can receive OK with this third account.
  • but I cannot receive with a fourth acct but can send OK.
I changed my gmail password.

can you from gmail

I recommend in respect of these accounts
  • but I cannot send with a third for which the outgoing smtp.gmail always fails, although I can receive OK with this third account.
  • but I cannot receive with a fourth acct but can send OK.
for which you say
I changed my gmail password.
and presuming you mean for those TWO accounts , the third and the fourth,

Then I suggest you see this

and follow the procedure exactly including deleting the passwords for those two accounts on SMTP
==========================================
Other than that I regret to say that I cannot help
As two accounts are working OK and two are NOT it seems rather definite that it is a password authentification issue on those two accounts

I am still UNCERTAIN as to passwords being gmail passwords OR app specific for these two faulty accounts
as you said THEY DO NOT MATCH

Your insistence that it was an authentication issue was the goad that made me work on it. First, I cleared the decks by getting a new password for the email. Next. I went to thunderbird (my email client) and discovered the dumb problem, a typo in the username of the IMAP mail server. I made sure that they were the same and that fixed it. Thanks for your help.

BTW how do I make a case SOLVED?
