Audio keeps reverting to white noise/static until the output device is changed

Hello all.
I'm trying to get audio working via toslink cable and a soundbar. I mostly use headphones, and for years I had failing Logitech PC speakers (connected with standard audio outs from the mobo). I finally sent those to recycling and made do with just the headphones. But I want to use speakers again, and I have a couple of soundbars lying around so I thought I'd switch to one of those and use the motherboard's optical out. The first setup was using an old Sony HT-CT100 soundbar/subwoofer-receiver device. It seemed to work fine for the past couple of weeks. However, I did have to come to terms with the Toslink only ever transferring 2.0 channel audio. That's fine, for any real immersive applications I will use my headphones.

Ok, all was well until today when I couldn't get any audio from this output device. I double-checked all connections and verified the correct device was selected as default at the OS level, and that the 3rd party mixer I use (EarTrumpet) had the correct device selected. It appeared as though the audio was being put out, but nothing was being received by Sony. It would occasionally make an instant "burst" of sound when I changed output devices sometimes.

At this point, I thought I'd test the stand-alone, more modern Onn soundbar since the Sony is 14 years old and not made for this use-case. I got the Onn bar hooked up and all seemed well. The sound even quality seemed better than the Sony, much clearer. Anyway, after carrying on like this for an hour or so, the issue returned, but much different. Now, I will be listening to audio (mostly Youtube from Firefox, but also system sounds from a browser game), when all of a sudden it switches to loud static, like full white-noise static. The only thing that seems to fix it is switching to a different audio output device, and then back to the Realtek Optical. It will then play fine for 15 minutes, half-hour, etc. until once again reverting to static suddenly.

Please let me know any additional specs that would be helpful.

Here's what I've tried:
  1. Disabled all other unused audio devices
  2. in Windows Sound settings: disabled all advanced options (i.e. "Audio Enhancements", "Spatial Sound")
  3. in Control Panel sound settings: disable "Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device"
  4. in Device Manager: removed device, rebooted and verified device reinstalled; verified drivers were updated
Specs:
  • Windows 11 Pro 23H2 Build 22631.3155
  • Motherboard = Asus Rog Strix Z-590E Gaming Wifi
  • Soundbar = Onn model 100015716

UPdate:
It seems the static is not constant, but instead, it is "replacing" output audio. So for instance if I pause the Youtube video the constant static stops. But, any intermittent sounds from any source, i.e. browser game, or Windows sounds), are replaced with intermittent bursts of static.

As you've already tried two different soundbars with the same results, and it is very unlikely to be a cable issue, my guess would be that the digital sound output on the m/b is failing.

To prove it has nothing whatsoever to do with Windows, you can create a Linux flash drive and boot up to that OS. You do not need to install the OS, just run it from the flash drive. I believe most distros come with Firefox, so you can test under similar conditions you currently use.

I booted into Mint and am unable to get any output from the soundbar. THe output is recognized as having the S/PDIF connected, and audio playback gives all impressions in the OS that it is working, just no sound from the speaker.

unfortunately no. I've had for a couple years just never tried that optical audio before. I'll have to look for another solution. Probably will just need to buy new PC speakers and use the composite jacks.

A bit of Googling tells me that you are not the first, or only one having trouble with the digital audio output on this board.

One option, if you wish to use the digital audio, might be to use a sound card. They are not too pricey ...

Thanks for the tip! I was planning on doing some deep googling on this issue later tonight so I'll keep that as a jumping off point

Found a comment on a YouTube video for this issue stating that Asus had released a firmware update for the Realtek chip. I downloaded it from the Asus site and updated it. So far, the optical out has been playing steady for ~4.5 hours with no hiccups so I'm hopeful it has resolved the issue. Here is the link for the version I used for reference if anyone else has this issue. It is the one labeled "ALC4080/ALC4082 audio FW update tool: Fixed SPDIF playing music is noisy". From further Reddit reading, it seems only Asus and MSI have released official firmware updates for some of their boards with the ALC4080/ALC4082 Realtek audio chips.
