Hello!
I hope you can help me with an issue I have.
My Asus Zenbook Pro 15 stops recognizing my external monitor (Samsung) every time it hibernates or when turned off while connected to it. The display remains there as I can move my mouse into it but it is just pitch black.

Asus support suggested me to go into the BIOS after turning it off, reset the settings to optimized ones, and start. That works fine. But I have to do that every time and went away from the computer for some time and this one hibernates, or each time I turn it off and I want to resume. It's quite annoying.

Also, sometimes when closing a browser tab, I see a black screen for just a few seconds. Or if I am watching videos, the sound freezes for a second. I am quite ignorant of the topic but makes me think this could all be related.

There are no updates from Windows 11, drivers, or anything else.

I figure from other posts that some more information could be useful:

Any idea what might be causing all these issues?

1. May I presume that you did SAVE those settings on exiting BIOS
usually F10 to save and exit.

===========
2. We need to know the exact mocel of Asus Zenbook Pro 15
we also need to know the exact model of the Samsung monitor
and how is the external monitor connected to the Zenbook please
eg HDMI - USB- etc.

3. When did the problem start, was it after 11 was installed or has this problem, always existed since you connected the external monitor.

4. Please tell us as much as you can, in detail, to gve us the best chance of solving it for you.

Hey Macboatmaster! Sorry for the delay in my response.

1. I do save the changes each time, F9->Confirm and then F10->Save and exit
===========
2. The exact model is Asus Zenbook Pro 15 UM535QA (Asus model website link)

The monitor is a Samsung C24F396FHU (Samsung model website link). Although I see now that in the Nvidia control panel shows up as C24F390. Not sure if this could be somehow related

Image

The external monitor is connected via HDMI. This problem happens regardless of the HDMI used (I have 3 different ones at home).
eg HDMI - USB- etc.

3. To be honest, I started using this monitor with my Asus a month or so ago. It's a monitor I use for my home office but that is with a Macbook, and usually, I was avoiding my home after working hours. Now, for personal projects, I started using it more and more and notice the issue once the Asus went into sleep mode. I'd say, therefore, has always been like this...

4. Black screen: As I said before, there must be something else around. When having multiple tabs running in the browser, sometimes the Asus screen goes black for a sec or 2 and then recovers. This I don't remember happening with the external monitor connected, but I would assume it is also true with it.
Render: On the graphic side, I saw how sometimes using the placeit.net website, the browser stops rendering mockups with the image uploaded. It simply shows a black canvas where the mockup and uploaded image should show up
Noise: Lastly, when playing videos, sometimes the sound freezes also for a sec, drifting whatever noise was being played. Normally I saw this without the external screen, mostly if I have a video running on one half of the screen and another tab on the other half.

I would say render and noise with and without an external screen. Black screen can't be sure...
Edit: The black screen just happened also with the external monitor. So all 3 with or without an extra screen.

Thanks for taking the time here 💪💪💪

1. Thanks for replying
especially thanks for the links provided

2. My first recommendation is to download this driver for the 3050Ti from Asus
Zenbook Pro 15 OLED (UM535, AMD Ryzen 5000 Series)|Laptops For Home|ASUS Global
NVIDIA Graphics Driver
Version V30.0.15.1169
1.41 GB
2022/03/01

Description :
This package includes an NVIDIA graphics driver to deliver powerful graphics rendering performance by enabling communication between the graphics chip and the operating system and applications.

3. The reason for my recomendation is that even with the development of Nvidia provided drivers for the laptop GPU`s Navidia still say
Release Highlights
Although GeForce Game Ready Drivers and NVIDIA Studio Drivers can be installed on supported notebook GPUs, the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) provides certified drivers for your specific notebook on their website. NVIDIA recommends that you check with your notebook OEM for recommended software updates for your notebook.

and it is just possible that windows 11 has installed another driver that is not entirely to the system.

4. Download that driver and save it to your desktop. Do NOT install it at this stage

5. Go to settings and pause windows updates

6. Go to settings - apps and uninstall the nvidia references
RESTART - not shutdown which is hybrid shutdown

7. Go back to the desktop and install the driver you downloaded from Asus

8. Test the system with the installed driver.

9. If no improvement we will try other possibole solutions when you reply

10. If it was only the external display issue on the Samsung then I may have suggested you see page 43 of the samsung manual
If the signal transmitted from the PC does not belong to the standard signal modes, the screen may be blank even though the power LED turns on. In such a case, change the settings according to the following table by referring to the graphics card user manual

BN46-00552H-Eng.pdf (samsung.com)

but that seems to be contradicted as a possible cause by the apparent BIOS optimum defaults.

11. On your reply please confrim you are using winddows provided security and defender as shown on your TSG info and not some third party Anti Virus

Hey M!
I have a few quick questions so I better understand. Should I delete ALL references to Nvidia or any specific one? (ie: leaving the Nvidia control panel). I am just unsure.
I´ll wait for your input and proceed after, with all highlighted steps.

As for the missed info by TSG info, I am using Avast Free antivirus.

Thanks again for all the help and time invested!

1. Your first job is to delay the driver issue and uninstall Avast Free
Use the procedure here
How to use the Avast Uninstall Tool | Avast
Read carefully it must be done in safe mode

2. CREATE a restore point BEFORE you uninstall Avast
(14) Create System Restore Point in Windows 11 Tutorial | Windows 11 Forum (elevenforum.com)
option one.

3. When you have uninstalled avast
Go settings
security and check that
all checks are green and it shows windows defender and windows security etc all in order
As on FIRST image on link below
(14) View Security Providers in Windows Security in Windows 11 Tutorial | Windows 11 Forum (elevenforum.com)

and on manage providers on second image

4. The reason in case you wondered why, you are uninstalling avast free is there are many reports of ther free version causing black scrreens on windows 11 and hang-ups when opening apps and files

5. I am offline until about 2100
please post the results of the system performance after uninstalling avast

Okay!, I did as you guide me and remove Avast free in Safe mode, with a restore point created prior to that.
Once back, I checked and Settings>Security shows all protection areas with a checkmark.

So far I tested things out and seems to be working well. At least anything I can imagine I had problems with before (disconnecting the HDMI, sleep mode, browser tabs, video).

  1. Should I continue then with the Nvidia reference removal or maybe observe how things behave a bit more?
  2. I do have to ask, as I feel a bit uneasy, what antivirus do you recommend then? I am not sure how safe I feel with Windows without one (at least that is what I was always recommended).

1. Re your point 1 - Lets see how things are, before we proceed with the driver change it may prove not to be necessary

2. re your point 2
In times past you were right but the windows secuirty centre as is now with Defender and all its enhancements is totally reliable and indeed far more so than some of the free third party antivrus apps which usually sooner or later cause problems especially on 11
Whereas Windows security is not only free but is 100% compatible with windows 100% of the time.
That is the overriding advantage that cannot be said for many of the third party antivirus.

As with any antivirus do not test it effectivess by using BitTorrent and clearly questionable free downloads, which often especially in the case of Torrents come with malware

What you may not know is that Avast is the same group as Norton, AVG and Avira and Ccleaner and as a result of this Avast is recvognised to have followed the line of Norton in installing so many facets to its antivirus, that whilst effective it may be as an AV it now has somewhat of a reputation to slow performance generally and cause problems
Gen (gendigital.com)
PERHAPS the ready proof is provided by you in your statement
So far I tested things out and seems to be working well. At least anything I can imagine I had problems with before (disconnecting the HDMI, sleep mode, browser tabs, video).

Re windows security and defender
Stay protected with Windows Security - Microsoft Support

I can assure you that is now generally rated by independant reviews as a benchmark by which other AV products should be judged.

That said it must be your choice, but I would strongly urge you to stay with Defender and Windows security.

Those are great points in regard to Windows security. I was digging a bit the link Stay protected with Windows Security - Microsoft Support and that shed light on some aspects I was really not aware of.
Also, I was not aware was from the same company as Norton and others. I´ve been using it for quite a few years now and always thought it was the alternative to them 😅.

As for the overall status, today I was using the machine quite a bit and it seems the issue with the external monitor is not around. At least for now (again, turning the laptop off, hibernation, unplugging the HDMI and all, but every time picked it up).

---

Sadly, I cannot say the same for the black screen. Today right after I turned it back on and picked up where I left yesterday (a few open tabs in the browser), I played around with one and as soon as I closed it... black screen again.
I assume the Nvidia procedure might after all be indeed necessary. But will wait for your input cause I´m still unsure how many of the Nvidia listed items I just remove if not all (including the Nvidia Control Panel).

Sidenote: I started a full scan performed with Windows security and while there is a message right below "Feel free to keep working while we scan your device"... boy! the fans picked up! Could this be related to the graphics too?

Macboatmaster, mate, thanks a lot for the time invested so far 🙌

I doubt it is related to the graphics card

2. If you did feel free to carry on working during the scan that may well be the cause.
A full scan is VERY system intensive and if you were trying to use the drive that was being scanned for accessing files orf specifically gaming or intensive cpu work - you can expect the fans to click in. Esepcially on a laptop.

3. Generally a quick scan is all that is required and a full scan is only necessary when something is found on a quick scan and usually the system will recommend such
full scan or offline scan
Virus & threat protection in Windows Security - Microsoft Support
IN fact unless you alter settings it scans automatically

see this from link
Even though Windows Security is turned on and scans your device automatically, you can perform an additional scan whenever you want.

  • Quick scan. Concerned that you may have done something to introduce a suspicious file or virus to your device? Select Quick scan (called Scan now in previous versions of Windows 10) to immediately check your device for any recent threats. This option is useful when you don’t want to spend the time running a full scan on all your files and folders. If Windows Security recommends that you run one of the other types of scans, you'll be notified when the Quick scan is done.
  • Scan options. Select this link to choose from one of the following advanced scan options:
    • Full scan. Scans every file and program on your device.
    • Custom scan. Scans only files and folders that you select.
    • Microsoft Defender Offline scan. Uses the latest definitions to scan your device for the latest threats. This happens after a restart, without loading Windows, so any persistent malware has a more difficult time hiding or defending itself. Run it when you are concerned that your device has been exposed to malware or a virus, or if you want to scan your device without being connected to the Internet. This will restart your device, so be sure to save files you may have open

4. IT was however. I agree a good idea to run the full scan on Defender for this first time with Defender as your security provider - BUT it will not be necessary in future unless asked to do so, as a quick scan and indeed ther automatic scan will suffice.

5. Re the black screen
IF THIS IS ON the Samsung monitor and there is now NO OTHER KNOWN PROBLEM could you please refer to point 10 on post 4.
Sadly, I cannot say the same for the black screen. Today right after I turned it back on and picked up where I left yesterday (a few open tabs in the browser), I played around with one and as soon as I closed it... black screen again.
SORRY if I have missed something you have said, but I am unlcear if the black screen after closing the browser tab was on the samsung or the Laptop screen

6. IF it is on the Zenbook screen, as apart from ONLY on the Samsung, what browser are you using please and unless private what was the tab to

7. I am not going with the driver issue at this time, now we know all is solved except this black screen issue, but if it presists we can follow it.

8. My bet at the moment in view of your last post about closing the tab, is a browser issue - probably - an extension
I suggest you disable any non standard especially third party ones like
AVG Online Security - Chrome Web Store (google.com)

Hey Macboatmaster!

Thank you very much for all the information in regard to the Antivirus and Windows protection. That was quite insightful and helpful. I must say I WAS using/working while the full scan was running. But I also saw in the MyAsus app, the the battery was set to performance mode. I remembering changing that but for some reason was reverted.
I changed it again to balance and double-checked stayed in that option after restarting, and I can say I never heard the fans again. I am no gamer or anything. My issue revolves more around "browser tabs", which I know they can also consume quite a lot so trying to keep that on check 😅:

Black screen
I gave and I am giving myself some time to test this out. I did see the other day (only once) the black screen when using the laptop and: 1) it was connected to the external monitor 2) it happened in both devices at once.

But after I followed your advice and remove some chrome addons. I haven't seen it since... I don't have anything like the AVG. Neither I experienced the audio issue, yet.

I'll keep things on check. I won't be using it much for the next couple of days as I won't be around, but when I'm back I need to work big time, so will be great to stress test it.

Thanks again for everything so far and will be in touch!

Hey Macboatmaster, how are you doing mate?
Sadly I must inform you that after a week of using it my computer on and off, I see that some issues reappeared.

1- While the issue with sound freezing briefly never occurred again,
2- That is not the same with the black screen when closing tabs (very randomly, now and then) and
3- the most annoying one: the external screen stops. For some reason, after sleep mode or turning off, I find myself having to close everything again, turn off the computer and perform the bios steps (F9 for optimized mode and F10 to save).

To make things a bit more funny, I see my girlfriend using her Asus Zenbook (a bit older than mine) every day with the same screen but no issues whatsoever😅

Hope I find you with time to squeeze a bit more your knowledge,

As a temporary solution instead of the above try
Ctrl + Shift + Windows key + B
