I have components for my computer that i need to assemble and i was wondering if i should worry about static damage. Some said i need a wrist strap of some sort but im not sure if i really need one. Should i take the chance?

My advice would be that you should take the precaution.

While I have never destroyed any device since CMOS static sensitive components were first released and seldom use a wrist strap, there are just too many unknown factors to eliminate the possibility in a catch-all advice not to do so.

Clothing/footwear/flooring/humidity all have an effect.

If you chose not to follow kiwiguy's advice, at least touch the chassis or power supply case before handling any board, card or component. Ensure that the power supply is unplugged before using this method.

Build your computer on a hard surface, away from carpets if possible. Wear shoes and a short-sleeved cotton shirt. Synthetic materials like polar fleece are static generators. so it's best to wear natural fibres which don't create little lightning clouds every time you shift your feet.

To ground yourself while you work touch the metal case of the power supply or the unpainted metal area of the computer case.
Be sure to unplug the power cord from the power supply before connecting any of the power cables to the components.

Handling Components Correctly When handling computer components like motherboards, video cards, memory, or even a hard drive it is best to hold them by the edges. If you hold that videocard (for example) by the edges the PCB it is less likely that your fingers will even come in contact with any conductors, decreasing the chance of causing any ESD damage further still.

Obvious precautions: Try not to remove articles of clothing while you work on the computer, for esthetic as well as practical reasons. DO NOT let your cat near the computer parts. Cats are walking static death bombs.

Thanks for the advice but I called my friend and he assembled it, on carpet, in socks and a long sleeve sweatshirt while drinking monster! But it works and I thank you all for the advice!

The thing about ESD is not just a instant failure of the parts but what it does is pits the silicone therefor degrading and shorting the life span of the chip. So, if ESD damage did occur it could be today, tomorrow, next year before it fails. This is why such precautions are taken.
