Application Recovery Disks Nightmare

Basically, I am the poster child for computer dummies so try not to laugh too hard at my dilemma. My operating system is WindowsME. I only use my pc for email and internet which I have through AOL with a DSL high speed modem provided by them. I kept receiving a message when starting pc that was telling me that there was a problem with a file named IPHLPAPI.DLL (not a clue what any of this means). I contacted AOL and they basically told me to use the Application Recovery Disks that came with pc and uninstall windows, then use these disks, which I did. My pc was purchased in December 2000 so they are pretty old. Now everything has been reset to the original settings with useless programs and outdated info. My password even shows up invalid for aol. The text on my screen is shaking slightly but enough to give me a headache. I am beginning to believe I would be better off to ditch ME and purchase XP just to be able to start over, but can't really afford it right now. How can I begin to dig myself out of this one. Also, I am still getting the message about the IPHLPAPI.DLL file. Please, HELP!

First off, just because some idiot, who knows nothing more than what they see reading a computer screen, at AOHell tech support tells you to wipe out Windows and start from scratch, next time tell them to pack sand and stick it high up there. Ok? Wiping everything out like they told you was not the way to fix your computing difficulty. You should now thank them by canceling your AOL subscription and getting a real ISP through a local provider.

Likely you now just need to increase your screen size to 16 bit and 800 x 600 and, change the adapter refresh rate to Optimal.

Right-click an open space on your desktop; Point to Properties; Click the Settings tab; Use the slider and drop-down arrow to choose the lowest 16 bit color quality setting and screen resolution of 800 x 600, Click the Apply button, click the OK button.

Change the video adapter setting to Optimal by - Right-click an open space on your desktop; Point to Properties; Click the Settings tab; Click the lower Settings or Advanced button; Click the Adapter tab; Use the drop-down arrow beneath the Refresh Rate heading to choose Optimal; Click Apply; Click OK.

you'll have to re-install the modem software for your DSL service. make AOHell technical support help you do all this modem and AOL re-installation.

Windows ME is excellent and your computer may not be compatible with WinXP. In fact if you don't know much about working with computers, like the simple video settings mentioned above, or lack of a simple free firewall like Sygate, you would not want to try upgrading your operating system to XP or anything else.

You need to be running a firewall like free Sygate from http://download.com - type, sygate, in the Search box, you must be on-line to register Sygate, that is if you're not using a firewalled Router on a Network or, have another third-party firewall like Sygate installed, to protect you and the Internet community from hackers, spammers and terrorist from using your computer for their own illicit needs while you're on-line? Especially if you have broadband. Or didn't the mindless dummies at AOL tell you that you must have a firewall to protect your computer's operating system?

What anti-virus are you using? If you're running Mcaffee or Norton anti-virus and have not recently paid for a one year subscription to download weekly new virus definitions, you might consider getting free AntiVir 6 from http://free-av.com - Uninstalling Mcaffee; Restarting your computer and installing free AntiVir Anti-virus 6.0.

A simple search on the Internet for IPHLPAPI.DLL produced the above results. Or doesn't the Internet Explorer browser 'skin' AOL uses not gave a Search box. AOL doesn't have their own browser, they license Internet Explorer from Microsoft but they disable most of its useful features.

Weren't you aware that you have to get on-line with AOL then open a Internet Explorer (IE) browser window then go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and get all the Critical Updates and Service Packs or your browsing is as insecure as not having a firewall on either dial-up or broadband? AOL doesn't use their Netscape (NS) browser, they use Internet Explorer. If they didn't tell you that, that's a lie by omission. Obviously AOL doesn't care if you browse insecurely or get your operating system destroyed by puke hackers causing you to re-install with pathetic technical support after they ruined your operating system with their lies.

Get a real ISP, but that's just me.
