I forgot to mention something interesting:
I temporarily fixed this problem by using a DOS based Defrag program. I never let the defrag occur, but the startup to it seemed to be enough to solve the problem. On the computer's next boot up, I the problem came back, and I had to use the temp fix again. Anyway, I hope that sheds a little light on this problem.
