I would like to know which aol program files I need to keep to open aol art images. I have hundreds of images from service manual sites I would like to access.
I can’t keep aol full program on my OS, it becomes too unstable, but it will open the art images.
Thanks

Hi slls, and welcome to TSG.

Does the AOL software give you the option opening an ART file and then saving it in a different file format like .GIF, .TIF, .JPG or .BMP?

As far as I know, ART files are only used by AOL to further compress graphics files to speed up their transmission. Your best bet might be to convert them to another format and then confirm that you are satisfied with each conversion. This should also allow you to use the graphics in other programs.

You can then completely un-install the AOL software and delete the original .ART version.

Thanks for the replies. I downloaded CompuServe 7.0, not as aggressive as AOL, so I can just leave it for now. I downloaded near a thousand images and not knowing left them in art compression. It’s a slow process, putting them in bmp.

.art files are really old.
Yes AOL ART files are old. The GIF file format has been around for about 20 years and so I would think that qualifies it as being old as well. As far as I know just being old does NOT prevent ART and GIF file formats from still being actively used for sending graphics files over the Internet.
