You simply set up a Message Rule. It's more convenient with less clicks and a shallow learning curve. Plus it's free.
With Outlook Express open click the Tools menu; Message Rules; Mail; Click the New button; Under the number (1) 'Conditions' window, tick the box next to, 'Where the From line contains people'; In the number (2) Actions window, tick the box next to, 'Move it to the specfied folder'; In box number (3) 'Rules description' click on the blue 'contains people' entry; Enter your first Approved Sender for example, [email protected] and click the Add button (you can click the Address Book button at right to add e-mail addresses from senders in your Windows or (Outlook Express) Address Book to your approved senders White List to save some typing); In the lower right New Mail Rule box now click the Options button; choose the option, 'Message does not contain the following people' and, 'Message matches any of the following people'; Click the OK button; Click the next OK button; Click the blue 'specified folder entry and then use the wizard to choose the folder you want to send unapproved messages to like, 'Deleted Items' (or a folder called Spam you've created prior to starting to set up this rule) (please see adding folders or sub-folders in the Outlook Express Help files); Click the Add button; Enter the next approved sender or, you can go back in this same area later by entering the New Mail Rule #1 (by clicking on the filter name), or whatever you named the rule, and clicking any blue approved sender again and then entering the next approved sender and clicking the OK button when you're done.
You enter all the approved senders you require to complete the white list, and (after closing then restarting Outlook Express when receiving messages, only those approved senders you designate to the filter will go in your Inbox. All others will go in the folder you designate. Note that if you use Deleted Items to send the non-approved senders to, in the Outlook Express Options area (Tools menu; Options; Maintenance tab) the checkbox should be cleared next to, "Empty messages from the Deleted Items folder on exit."

Yes i am familiar with the Message rules section.
Did you know you can go into the 'Options' and "reverse"
your choice of action ... if (styx or styxx or Styx or
Styxx) does NOT appear in the header then move to
deleted items.
My message rules have grown to around forty and show
no sign of stopping.
Even using very sweeping terms like 'por' and 'el'
which i dont like doing, to direct them to the
deleted folder.
I also use the upside-down question mark to direct
email to the deleted folder.
These terms i consider 'sweeping' because they net a
very wide variety of unwanted foreign email.
So i am now looking into using 'Bayseian' techniques
to sort my mail into the 'Probably Spam' folder.
Mainly because RTF and fancy picture mail seems to
use characters that i have rejected cos they're in
the ASCII subset for foreign characters, and such
mail gets kicked into my 'Probably Spam' folder.
So i have ended up with Spambully, but haven't tried
it yet.
I am hoping that it will sort out a high percentage
of unwanted email.

No No. You just need one (1) rule. The one I outline above. If you've got blocked senders entered, take them all out until the the windows is blank. Do the same with the Rules area. Take all the useless ones out you've enter/created previously then create the white-list I recommend the way I describe, enjoy.
Sure, it sounds as if you said it exactly right. I'd just clean up your Outlook Express rules area and add Approved Senders only in a White-List filter. Spammers change (fake) their From address in their e-mail headers on purpose to avoid being reported by users like us to their ISPs so, creating a rule for a specific sender or a Block Sender entry is always useless, a route of defense that won't work.

tolerant of this.
If someone i don't know sends me an email that is not

rejected.

I am also looking at the possibility of configuring 'Outlook' either
instead of or in addition to 'Outlook Express' as it may be easier
to set up the bayseian system using 'Outlook'
I dont know if the two systems will both run, or if i will have to
remove one of them.

Any probs installing ?
Can it work on headers alone,
or does it need to download the whole email ... ?
I'm on dial-up and some mail can take a long time to D/L
but headers come through fairly quickly.

Thanks Ping, i think i will try installing Spambully and
see how it goes.
Cheers Hewee, i have been through those pages before, i'm
not very impressed with 'whitelisting' to me it is rather
like having an ex-directory phone number, which is some
thing i find very annoying.
But i accept that this is a valid solution and many people
are quite happy with it.
I'm going to see how i get on with Spambully.

Also you can change your email address if you want.
But don't use [email protected] Get some user name that is not what everyone else may have. Like [email protected] Then keep it safe and never sign up at places using you isp address. If you do use your isp for things like that then setup a 2nd email address but again use a name that is not easy to pick up on by adding numbers #&%_- etc to your name. Then you can give every one your new address.
14 months now and no spam at all from comcast. Others says they get tons of it.
When I got comcast I made sure to check or uncheck the box saying I do not want new letters, to know of updates etc. It did say you got opt-out later and they would stop the emails. But it was posted over at comcast forum that it does not stop and they had posted a link to comcast where it says some 3 party people may still email you. Wow once you get on the list then a 3rd party gets your address you know what happens. SPAM, SPAM and more SPAM.

It put another icon on my desktop for my email,
which brings up 'Outlook Express with Spambully in it'
So i have removed the shortcut to 'Outlook Express'
that i was using before.
I think thats what to do.
So far i haven't found any clear instructions.
Not keen on the 'Auto-message' i might re-write that.
