Hi,

About a week ago my laptop starting to act strangely. It started with the usual stuff such as being redirected to sites which I didn't want to go to (usually Anti-Virus sites), then seemingly a windows pop up came up to say "WARNING, your computer may be infected with spyware..." I know this to be a fake warning so I immediately shut off the laptop and restarted it. However, the damage was done and my laptop has not been working properly since.

Symptoms include:

  1. Windows Security being disabled. (My device manager is acting up) I have had my windows security services disabled and cannot start them back up.
  2. No system restore points, they are all missing and no new ones have been created.
  3. My primary security source, Mcafee, has stopped working as well as the other on demand services I use such as Malwarebytes and Spybot (the latter two refuse to even open)
  4. Any time I tried to run a Mcafee scan, a wndows message box would appear sayinig "Mcafee virus scan has had to close due to an error..we apologise for the inconvenience." (I have since had to uninstall Mcafee as it would cause the computer to freeze)
  5. Am redirected to sites from links which I click in google.
  6. A blue screen frequently appears saying that "Windows has shut down your computer to prevent serious damage to it....Beginning physical dump of memory"
Since I can't use my own virus scanners, I have run an online virus scan from HouseCall and on the first run it said there were two trojans (though I can't quite remember the names) and "removed" them. To be sure I ran another scan, this time it came up clean, however it hasn't helped, the problems still remain.

My computer is running Microsoft XP with service pack 3.
I have included a Hijackthis log. Any help given would be much appreciated.

Hello, and
to the Techguy forums.
My name is Michael I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

HijackThis logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me. I know that you need
your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that happen.

Please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • If after 3 days you have not responded to this topic, it will be closed, and you will need to start a new one.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • All of my posts need to be checked by a teacher, so please be patient while I attempt to remove your malware.

Make an uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:
  • Start HijackThis
  • Click on the Config button
  • Click on the Misc Tools button
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
  • Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Save the file to your desktop.

Please post this log on your next reply. Please also note: you do not need to bump your thread. I will reply as soon as I can.

Thanks, Michael

I'm afraid I have unpleasant news for you. You have a Very Dangerous infection on this machine.
The infection is delivered by sdra64.exe and here
It allows outsiders COMPLETE access to every keystroke, account, and password you use while on this machine, and complete access to any other data present...
IF this computer has been used for any kind of important data, my best recommendation is to Disconnect from Internet, Re-Format the entire drive and re-install your Operating system and Applications.

We can try to clean the infected files off the computer, but we cannot be sure that the infection has not caused irreparable damage to the operating system as a whole. In that instance, even after a attempted removal of the infections, you could be subject to another attack or takeover as soon as you re-connect to the Internet.

The Decision Whether to Reformat or Not should be based on:
  • The use of the computer - this is the primary factor in the decision whether to re-format and re-install, or just disinfect.
  • The variety of malware - this influences the decision on whether to re-format and re-install, or just disinfect. IN THIS CASE we have a backdoor which can steal personal data, the worst kind.
If the Computer has been used for any important data, you are strongly advised to do the following, immediately:
  • Disconnect the infected computer from the internet and from any networked computers until the computer can be cleaned.
  • Back up all important data on the machine. Do not back up any Applications (programs). Those should be re-installed from the original source CDs or websites.
  • If you have ever used this computer for shopping, banking, or any transactions relating to your financial well being:
Call all of your banks, credit card companies, and financial institutions, informing them that you may be a victim of identity theft, and to put a watch on your accounts or change all your account numbers.
  • From a clean computer, change ALL your online passwords -- for ISP login, email, banks, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, online companies, and any online forums or groups you belong to.
  • DO NOT change passwords or do any transactions while using the infected computer because the attacker will get the new password and transaction information.
  • Take any other steps you think appropriate for an attempted identity theft.
While you are deciding whether to Reformat and Re-Install, a useful link is here: http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10063
Please let me know what you decide.

Hi Michael,

Needless to say that your findings have distressed me greatly. However, I think that the only thing for me to do is re-format the drive and reinstall everything; though I know that this is going to be time consuming, not to mention annoying.

I haven't really used my laptop for banking or anything like that since I started to notice it was acting strangely, I perhaps accessed my hotmail account a few times but can't say for sure; However, I did create my account for this forum on my laptop. I am not certain whether I have any serious security information on my laptop but I would like to know whether it would be safe to move my files and folders such as word files and stuff to an external hard drive? I have a lot of university work on there and it would be devastating if I had to erase all of it.

For the time being I have disabled my WiFi connection on my laptop as you recommended. Does this mean that my laptop is safe from more information being transmitted over the internet? (Obviously I realise that the computer is still infected but the cyber thief can't get any more info, right?)

Thanks for getting back to me so soon and diagnosing the problem. I would now really appreciate it if you could guide me in re-formating the drive and getting rid of this infection entirely.

Thanks

Yes, it is safe to backup word files and other documents. Just make sure that you don't backup anything that you don't know what it is: it could be part of the infection.

I understand your distress about the situation but I assure you my advice is the most prudent course of action and if my computer I would not hesitate to carry out a reformat and reinstallation of the Windows operating system.

Good, disconnecting from the internet is a good idea. The trojan cannot send information if it is not connected.

You can read this guide, here, which tells you how to reformat.

If you have any questions, please ask. :)

Hi,

I tried posting on here but it kept saying the ticket had expired. Anyway, I was wondering if there was any way of backing up my Microsoft Office tools as I don't have the installation CD as it was preinstalled. I realise that if I do a reformat of the drive it will wipe everything including Office.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance
