From what you're describing, it seems as if you've associated a file incorrectly with opening in Notepad, hence subsequent issues with opening the same file-type. I'm guessing the file in question has a .JAR extension. Is this correct?
If this is true, I recommend uninstalling the Java Runtime Environment from your PC, rebooting it, and then going to this page to download and install the package again. This should re-associate the .JAR extension properly for you.
