Have you downloaded divx player, also make shure you download and install nimo codec, and also try this software gordion knot.

I am not having an easy time figuring out how to play an avi movie.
I have a Pentium 200Mhz Win98 SE with 128MB RAM. It has an ATI All in Wonder video card that I can use to record video to the HD. The ATI software saves the files as avi and they play just fine when I play them on this machine with the ATI player. They also play in WMP version 6, but the color is not good.
When I tried to play the file on my newer Win XP machine using WMP version 8.0 and QuickTime they both would only play the audio and they both tried to download the codec required but couldnt find one.
I downloaded a 30day trial version of Ace Media Player, which plays all kinds of files including avis. I installed it and tried to play the avi file but got a message saying that components from Real Player were needed, so I went there and finally found the FREE download (I wouldnt give them a nickel for their POS software, they suck but thats another rant). Got Real Player installed tried playing it in Real Player as well as the Ace Media Player, but still only the audio only played!
Well whats up with that? I guess not all avis are created equally. Does anyone have any insight to this problem? Maybe Ill go look around at ATIs site. Maybe Im just expecting too much from a six year old All in Wonder card. I dont know.

i've got an even older vid card and avi files play fine
but you're right - not all files are created equal
make sure you have the latest vid drivers etc on the xp machine
(have you tried installing the AIW software on the xp, even though it has a different card? - just to get the player)
you might want to try one of the codec packs (not nemo) like the SLD pack , or a different (free) player from this list of players:

-bsplayer is decent
-zoom is good
- that site also has an extensive group of forums about video matters
try GSpot to see what codecs you have, and what's needed
and i'd remove real player just on general purposes

that sounds like a good idea maybe I'll give it a try now that I have XP on the newer PC. I have so far never tried installing a five year old program onto an XP. The last time I checked ATI's site the AIW card that I have isn't supported past Win98.
Problem is that I need to put these avi files on CDs and have them play on OPMs (other people's machines too).

The whole time I was installing Real Player I was saying to myself I shouldn't be doing this, I'm just gonna get mad and make my toothache worse! Oh but I'm more sophisticated now than the last time I installed this crap, I'm using "custom" installation option this time making sure it doesnt take over all file associations and making sure it doesnt start automatically with Windows, and no I dont want three different shortcuts thats basically all you can do during custom install. After its done installing and I start it for the first time it automatically starts attempting to access the Web, somehow it got past ZoneAlarm, anyway I stopped it from connecting, and shut it down. When I tried to restart it numerous time it would not start! Reboot computer. Then I get it started and try to play the avi movie, but it needs to find a suitable decompressor so I let it check but the search turns up nothing and the avi still only plays the audio track. Oh well I forget about it for now and go on to other things. Later that day to my surprise a Real Networks instant messenger pops up asking me if I wanted to check my two new messages. I calmly closed that box and went straight to Add/Remove Programs!
