Advice on using an Asus Rt-AC88U router with a PON modem

I have fiber coming into my flat and connecting to an Eltex NTE-RG-1421G-WAC modem/router combo via the PON port. I wanted to get an Asus RT-AC88U router but I am concerned about speed loss. The Eltex NTE-RG-1421G-WAC modem/router combo does not have external antennae. I am not getting a strong signal in the back of the flat and even next to the router on my iPhone, I get about 90 Mbps download and 75 Mbps upload on the Speedtest app on the 5 GHz band. The ISP advertises 100+ Mbps speed. I am going to contact the ISP about the less than advertised speed but my primary question remains, will I see speed loss by adding the Asus RT-AC88U router? If so is there a better solution?

That's about right.....you never get the as advertised speeds. This is simply because of lag, whether it be on the hardware (modem/router or network adapter) or line latency or degradation. I'd say with your 90 mbs is on par.

As for your question goes; Adding a 2nd router is not going to bode well. Unless you turn it into a repeater or turn off the wifi of your ISP modem/router. Other wise you're going to have two different wifi networks.

You can buy wifi repeaters to extend the signal of your ISP wifi.....but you'll need to do some research and shopping.

My rule of thumb is that if I get 90% of the ISP's advertised speeds don't worry about it. If I get less than 80% investigate to determine why. Between 80% and 90% what I do may vary.

Adding another router either by daisy chaining it or by using it as a wireless access point will not slow your speeds. Just make sure that the multiple wireless networks do not interfere with each other, or disable the network(s) on the modem/router.

A Repeater (or range extender) will slow the wireless network unless it has the ability to communicate with the router on one network (say, the 5 GHz) and with clients on another (say, the 2.4 GHz).

So I'm thinking I will add the Asus router and disable the wireless on the modem. Does this sound good or will I lose speed this way? I apologize, I'm dealing with a lot and a little fuzzy. Thank you for the replies and the advice.

You will not lose speed that way (unless the Asus router is defective).

If you daisy-chain them (connect LAN port on the modem/router to the WAN port of the Asus) make sure that the two routers are using different LAN subnets (e.g., one could use 192.168.1.x and the other 192.168.3.x).
