Hi, my Advent 8117 laptop will no longer connect to the Internet -through ethernet cable (wireless has never worked). Also, the DVD player has stopped working. Both happened immediately after I installed PC Tools Spy Doctor anti-virus and Registry Toolkit software (may be coincidental, but no response from PC Tools so cancelled and removed software). Has Vista Home Premium installed

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Vista or Window 7.

Start, All Programs\Accessories and right click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt.

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands:

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset IPv4 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log

Reset IPv6 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log

Reboot the machine.

Next, plug into a known good port with a known good cable, reboot and then post the following.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Hi John, in the command prompt when I type "reset etc" I get the message back that reset is not recognised as an internal or external command.

Please advise

Please post the exact contents of the command prompt when you attempt to run the commands. Here's what I'd like you to do.

Hi John, I realised my mistake and did as you say already, and psoted the results -which you should see on the enxt post I made (no 3)

Is that OK -does that give the info you need; it was the entire results having copied as you suggest

Did all of the commands run successfully? If you look at my post, you'll see that I wanted to see exactly what you saw when running the stack reset commands.

OK John, heres the results of those first tests:

Sucessfully reset the Winsock Catalog.
You must restart the computer in order to complete the reset.

C:\Windows\system32>netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log
Reseting Echo Request, OK!
Reseting Global, OK!
Reseting Interface, OK!
A reboot is required to complete this action.

C:\Windows\system32> netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log
Reseting Echo Request, OK!

Have you tried a new cable and a known good port on the router? If it still doesn't connect, I'm thinking your network interface may have gone bad.
