I don't know if anyone else will be as excited to tackle this problem as I am, but I hope so.

I'm at work, and since I started there has been a problem with the Administrator settings on my machine. No one from IT seems to be able to log on, and since they can't do this, no one can upgrade the software. It wasn't an issue until now, when there was a mandatory software upgrade, so they're saying the only thing to do is to format my machine and start over.

Anyone have any ideas about how to crack the password? It seems extremely rare that this question gets asked for a legitimate purpose, which is why I'm really curious about the reponse. Not sure how I can verify of course, but hopefully you'll take my word for it. I would LOVE to have it figured out when the IT guy comes back to format my machine. I'm running Windows 2000 Professional SP 4.

First off I find it hard to believe that your IT department is unable to reset the password on the admin account.

There are a number of programs that they can used to do this.

Call your IT department again ask them to reset the admin password on the pc.

I do not believe per TSG rules that I could give you the infomation that you are asking for.

Hmm.... Not sure about the reset option. I'll ask when they come back, but they didn't say anything about it. What are the programs you are referring to? Maybe it would click for them if I could name a couple.

The only problem with that tool is that "the user must have administrative privileges". If they had admin rights, this wouldn't be an issue in the first place.

This problem is too common and is one reason, if you feel it is necessary to restrict access, I like to recommend having at least one additional admin account on each computer.

Yes Bob I saw your postings for him to get the information from you but I did not fill right about refering him to your post again or giving out the name of the progams that can be used.

And I still find it hard to believe that any IT would not know how to do this.

I may be wrong about the policy here but I would pefer to error on the safe side as you did by not giving out the information on this site. But you did give him the choice of getting the information from you from a e-mail and really not sure if that is within the guild lines of this site

You have been around a lot longer than I have. :)

You just never know what to do at times you know what I mean :D

Figured if I took it outside of the scope of this forum, what I do on my own time isn't too much of a concern.

Also, again from his post, he wants to do it before the IT person gets there. That choice is his to make. Given how easy this software is to use, and how many people have just e-mailed me their success after using it, and how he can't log on now anyway, it seemed a good approach to take.

Just wanted to post a quick thank you to all who helped. Bob you're a genius. The utility worked easily and perfectly and I saved the IT department a ton of time consuming work. I'm a little surprised they didn't know themselves, but I really appreciate it. I also FINALLY got to update my Adobe Reader, Media Player, and Defrag the Hard Drive. That stuff had been driving me nuts. Thanks again.
