I dont know if it is possible but are they a way u can take a black and white photo and add color to it ?...i have a old photo of my papaw and i was goin to try to add color for christmas to him...i dont know how so if it aint hard could possible one do so for me ?...heres the photo

i wish it was aas easy as they said and made it look........mine loook liked garbarge

What editing program do you have ??
Got a higher resolution scan ????
The one you attached has a lot of jpeg compression distortion.
See the squares ???

The best method you will find for colorizing something is to do it by hand and as you found out that is very tedious and means a lot of trial and error and saves. As NOYB pointed out that pic you posted has a lot of compression artifacts which will make you colourizing a lot harder to do. That aside heres what I managed to pull off messing about with photoshop for a little while.

edit ---- had no clue what clour to make the eyes ;)

a suggestion-make a temporary photo with a color photo of someone with skin tones aproximating your subject along with your BW photo (both on one page)
Then use the color picker tool to determine aprox the skin colors both in shadow or light.
What those two examples did was amazing-seems I am always learning something on here.

Can you get us a higher resolution scan .. without so much compression ?
This one will be a lot of cleanup work and won't make a very good print at 4X6.
