Recently I've been getting Microsoft IE warning messages that "an ActiveX control on this page is not safe. Your current security settings prohibit running unsafe controls on this page. As a result, this page may not display as intended."

Previously I was always able to go to IRH (Internet Radio Hawaii) and listen to music, but tonight I returned there and when I clicked on PLAY I received a message which reads "ActiveX Viewer Not Installed." It goes on to warn me that the page I'm about to view contains an imbedded object of the following type:

Extension: asx
MIME type: video/x-ms-asf

Next, I am told that my computer does not have an ActiveX viewer for this type of object, and I am then given the option to download and install an ActiveX viewer automatically. However, when I click on YES to download the viewer, I get the following error message:

Iexplore
X This program has performed an illegal operation and will be
shut down.

Does the message quoted in my first paragraph mean to imply that I somehow need to change my security settings? Also, what must I do to be able to download and install an ActiveX Viewer? It's obvious that something needs to be done to prevent the "illegal operation" message from appearing. Any offers of help will be gratefully appreciated. Thank you.

Hiya

For the first part, it seems that your computer is set up for Secure browsing. Lets try a repair.

Control Panel | AddRemove. Doubleclick Microsoft Internet Explorer. Choose Repair, apply and restart.

Also, for the popup box that occurs, can you click Details and copy/paste the contents here?

Regards

Thank you for your response. I tried a repair but it didn't work. Next, I was unable to Copy/Paste the Details contents of the invalid page fault message, which reads as follows:

IEXPLORER caused an invalid page fault in module MSHTML.DLL at 0197:70d26785

The good news is that I was able to listen to IRH using both Netscape Communicator 4.7 and Opera 5.0, even though with Opera I get the following message:

javascript: URLs can only be run w/HTML documents.

Thanks again.

I just reread my post and I realize that my meaning was not clear, and I apologize for that. What I meant to say was that the repair process appeared to run smoothly, but that my problem was not solved as a result. I continued to have the problem even after going through an apparently successful repair process.

Thanks,
Bill

Hi,

Your security settings are probably set to high, which does mean that you get similar warnings as the one you mentioned.

This is normal, and good practice as well, if you value security.

About the "ActiveX Viewer Not Installed." message, you either always had the viewer, but it got corrupted somehow, and now it isn't recognized by the site, or they have some new kind of ActiveX control you need to download in order to listen to that station.

Hard to tell what it is, and why IE crashed .
