Accessing External Hard Drive

783 Views 5 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  TerryNet
I have an external hard drive that is connected to a laptop. I want to be able to view/access the files on that hard drive w/o physically having to be at the laptop it is connected to. Is my best bet for this to just set the drive as "shared" on my network so I can see the files from any computer connected to the network?

EDIT ---
2 machines are Win 7, 3 are Windows 8, we are behind different domains and connected to different workgroups, which I am sure throws a big wrench into things.

Best bet may be a router with a USB port for a drive. But sharing the drive should work if you've enabled file and printer sharing and keep the computer awake.

Please explain why the different workgroups and what do the domains have to with your local network?

Possibly nothing, but was putting it out there just in case that may cause a hiccup in any solution.

My router has a USB port - can I add files to the External Hard Drive while connected to the router or would I have to detach & reattach each time I wanted to add files?
I assume that you can add files. If you want to lend me your router I'll experiment. :)
