Hi ultima

Welcome to TSG!

Click here to download CWShredder. Close all browser windows,UnZip the file, click on the cwshredder.exe then click "Fix" (Not "Scan only") and let it do it's thing.

When it is finished restart your computer.

IMPORTANT!: To help prevent this from happening again, I strongly recommend you install the patches for the vulnerabilities that this hijacker exploits.

The simplest way to make sure you have all the security patches is to go to Windows update and install all "Critical Updates and Service Packs"

Come back here and post another Hijack This log and we'll get rid of what's left.

Yes, I did. I guess I will wait until it comes up tomorrow and I will resend the log file. It is very similar each time it comes up. A new *.dll\sp.htm will come up.

This is a new variant of CWS that is proving to be very elusive. There are several experts working on a fix for it so hang in there. They'll figure it out eventually.

I'm keping a close eye on the developments so as soon as I know something I'll post it here.

When/if it returns go aheads and post another HJT log.

Ultima please post another Hijack This log. The experts have come across a reg fix that I do believe will fix this once and for all. Post your current log and we'll give it a try.

Well even though the log is clean right now I'd say you should run this reg fix anyway.

Copy the text inside the quote box to Notepad, and save in a location of your choice as remove.reg (make sure you save as type: 'all files')

Doubleclick Remove.reg, and answer yes when prompted to add its contents to the Registry.

For XP/2K

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

Is the reg file suppose to remove or add the values in the the registry? I have done it but I have not seen it added when I open the registry with regedit.

I have the same problem everyone else is having and for now it won't completely go away. Just gonna have to wait and see what the pros do on how to fix this annoyance once and for all.

It seems to me like the problem shows when my schedule AVG virus test starts because I haven't have any problems until this schedule test starts. After it starts, I stop the AVG test right away and check. The about:blank startpage shows up again.

Any ideas guys.

Please help!

Thanks

Do this exactly in this order.....

Make sure that Cwshredder is at version 1.56.1 or later, earlier versions will not work.
First download CWshredder from http://www.thespykiller.co.uk and put it where you can find it easily.CWS installs via the byte verifier exploit in M$ JavaVM so just surfing a page with an infected applet can install it with no user participation. So once you’ve run the above, it is vital that you go Here click Scan for updates in the main frame, and download and install all CRITICAL updates recommended!

Then....

Reboot into safe mode by following instructions here: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...001052409420406
then as some of the files or folders you need to delete may be hidden do this:
Open Windows Explorer & Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and untick "hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
Click "Apply" then "OK"

Run hijackthis, tick these entries listed below and ONLY these entries, double check to make sure, then make sure all browser & email windows are closed and press fix checked

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINNT\System32\hboad.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINNT\System32\hboad.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINNT\System32\hboad.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINNT\System32\hboad.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINNT\System32\hboad.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://C:\WINNT\System32\hboad.dll/sp.html (obfuscated)
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,HomeOldSP = about:blank
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {E415F115-7B96-4D6C-BAA9-F53ADC1AD3BF} - C:\WINNT\System32\hboad.dll

Delete these files:
C:\WINNT\System32\hboad.dll
c:\filter.log

Copy the BOLD to Notepad, and save in a location of your choice as remove.reg (make sure you save as type: 'all files')

Doubleclick Remove.reg, and answer yes when prompted to add its contents to the Registry.

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\iSearch]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"SpecifyDefaultButtons"=dword:00000000
"Btn_Search"=dword:00000000
"NoBandCustomize"=dword:00000000
"NoToolbarCustomize"=dword:00000000

Now run CWShredder.....
Close all browser windows, click on the cwshredder.exe then click "FIX" (Not "Scan only") and let it do it's thing.
Now as CWS installs via the byte verifier exploit in M$ JavaVM, just surfing a page with an infected applet can install it with no user participation. So once you’ve run the above, it is vital that you go here, click Scan for updates in the main frame, and download and install all CRITICAL updates recommended.

then
Reboot normally & post a new log to check and let us know if the hijack has gone.
