5 beep POST, is CPU or MOBO dead?

7166 Views 12 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  replay
I've just built my second computer and I keep getting the "process failure" code when I boot. When I boot without RAM, I only get the 3 beep code. These are all new parts.

I have gone through many checklists, double checked all cords are connected, unscrewed the standoffs and pulled the MOBO out to boot. I've tried booting with nothing but the mobo plug and cpu connected, but still the same 5 beep code. I've pulled the CPU out bc I was kinda rough putting the stock cooler on, but no pins are bent or broken. The cpu fan is plugged in and working.

I'm convinced I must have been too rough with the mobo or perhaps either the mobo/CPU was dead on arrival, however unlikely that sounds. How can I diagnose this? I'd hate to have to unnecessarily buy a new part that isn't actually the problem. Any help would be appreciated.

do you agree that help may be easier if we knew some vital details

ASRock FM2A68M-DG3+
kingston hyperx fury 8GB RAM DDR3
MSI - Radeon R7 250 2GB
CPU is an AMD - A4 dual core, can't tell the exact model bc the rig isn't mine, but I can find out soon. all parts are new and compatible. The best way to solve my issue is to find out a way to test if the CPU has actually failed beyond the 5 beep "processor failure" code. I think there's a chance the mobo may be broken, not my cpu bc none of the pins are busted and its seated properly.
Are they short beeps or long beeps? I believe 5 short beeps indicates a bad CMOS battery.
I would check the graphics card is properly seated in the slot and if it is connected hdmi try vga
presuming that main and 12v aux power is connected from psu to board

Actually found out its an AMD - Athlon X4 845 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor, and it has an integrated graphics card in it, does it not? I always thought you don't need a GPU plugged in for a successful boot. 5 short beeps is a processor failure according the manual on asrock's website. The gpu itself does not require any power connectors as well.

I did not think I said it did

I would also check firmware version

and I did not think the CPU had integrated graphics

However I will now leave it with you and good luck with it
Found this on the mobo's website.

"Some of AMD CPU (i.e AMD Athlon/Sempron family CPU) does not have integrated graphics processor. When this kind of CPU is installed, a discrete VGA card is required."

You may need a PCI graphics card for it to work. Just out of curiosity, why are you building a computer with such ancient technology?
See my post above please
That CPU does not have integrated graphics.

I'm such an idiot. This whole time I thought it had an integrated graphics card, which is why I plugged the VGA into the mobo itself. Just plugged the VGA into the actual GPU and now I get the BIOS splash screen. Thank you so much.

Because it's for a friend, he's cheap, and he bought parts I have no experience with before telling me, yet expects me to build it anyway. =)

Your motherboard does have an integrated graphics card but the CPU doesn't have a graphics processor.
Pleased it is working

and re the beeps

My system (AM1/ FM2/ FM2+) won't boot up after 5 long beeps when only a CPU is installed. How do I resolve this problem?

A: 5 long beeps mean that the system couldn't recognize the graphics.

don't beat yourself up to much, we have all done that one or two times : )
