3d AGP ACCELAERATOR & DIRECTX 9

I have a laptop running XP with 3d AGP accelerator with 8mb of ram. I want to purchase some software that requires this accelerator with DIRECTX 9.

Using Windows update, I downloaded and "installed" Directx9. Windows update assures me that it was installed. My questions is this: Do I need to do anything else? Is the physical accelerator in my laptop now using this DIRECTX 9 software or do I need to do something else (like in the control panel).
