2 Optical Drives under Win XP

791 Views 6 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Dan O
I have a computer here - I have installed a second CD Drive (a cd-rom, to jjoin the current CDRW).. Now the problem is only the secondary master drive works - no matter the combination (slave/master, primary/secondary) I cannot get both drives going - it's always just the primary master that works. After booting off a startup disk both drives work fine in DOS.. But they arent found In windows device manager... Any help??

Does windows recognize both drives when connected individually? Have you tried to put your HD's on seperate channels and making your optical drives slaves on both channels? This supposedly helps performance too.
Yeah whichever drive is master detects.. Neither slave detects in WinXP though.. if they're both slave I have no CD Drives working..
I have to give the machine back today - Xmas pressie - but still no joy....

I have put it back to what it was but now My Computer shows two CD Drives even though there is physically only one present.
Reboot, depress F8, select Safe Mode, and delete the extra CD from Device Manager. Let us know if you need details how.
Even though two CD's show in My Computer, only one shows in Device Manager!!!
That's pretty wild, as it where Windows gets its information. I do believe you, but I am stump. Maybe someone else has another idea.
