100% CPU usage when computer is in "sleep" mode

10385 Views 20 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Macboatmaster
I have read countless articles regarding a Windows 7 computer using 100% of the CPU's capacity, but my situation isn't like any of the others described. While I'm using the computer it's not a problem -- CPU usage rarely goes over 65% & it's usually much lower. But since it takes a while for the computer to start up I usually don't shut it down, I put it "sleep" mode when I'm going to be away for a while, but want to get back to what I was doing with one click.

Sometimes when I get back to the computer I hear the cooling fan running as fast as it can (usually can't hear it) & when I click a key on the keyboard to "wake" the computer up I see that explorer.exe is using 100% of the CPU's capacity. I run a program called System Explorer all the time (similar to Process Explorer), which shows every program / process that's running & how much of the CPU & RAM each one is using. And every single time CPU usage jumps to 100% explorer.exe is the culprit.

Yes, I've run anti-virus & anti-malware scans & I have anti-virus & anti-malware programs running all the time. Zero problems detected. And again, when I'm using the computer I don't have any problems with high CPU or RAM use -- it only happens when I put the computer to "sleep" & it doesn't happen every time I do it.

I downloaded "SysInfo.exe" but it won't install due to an error I'll address in a separate post: "A Required Privilege Is Not Held By The Client." But here the basic computer info:

Dell deskside, Windows 7 (64-bit), Intel dual core CPU, 3 Ghz, 4 Mb RAM.

I would expect the CPU to be in high usage when waking up a system. The files that were in use, at the time of sending to sleep, must be copied from disk to the memory. This at times can take a while if a lot of programs and data were in use.
Try disabling hibernate and see what happens.

From Elevated command prompt
type powercfg -h off

While in command prompt the next command
  1. tasklist /svc /fi "IMAGENAME eq svchost.exe" > "%userprofile%\desktop\tasklistsvc.txt"
  2. Upload the Tasklistsv.txt to your reply
I mainly use Process explorer but if you can provide a report with your program it should work

Download Process Explorer
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/process-explorer

1. Save it to your desktop then run it.
2. Right Click and Select Run As Administrator
3. In the View Menu click on Select Columns
4. Check Verified Signer, Virus Total and Click OK
5. Select Options Menu and Check Verify Image Signatures, VirusTotal.com > Check Virustotal.com
6. Double Click on the CPU Column to sort by highest CPU usage.
7. (Highest CPU Processes should be at the top once sorted properly)
8. Wait approximately a minute
9. Select Save or Save As from the File menu and save SystemIdleProcess.txt to Desktop
10. Upload the file to your Reply

On another topic you have started
https://forums.techguy.org/threads/a-required-privilege-is-not-held-by-the-client.1208439/

you intimate that you use this program
https://www.reginout.com/

If you do, then THAT may well be the cause not only of the problem on your other topic, but also this problem.
SO the 1000$ questions are
1. Is that reginout with its so called optimization and make it go faster - claims running on the computer

2. What is this program please
run a program called System Explorer all the time
3.
I have anti-virus & anti-malware programs running all the time
Which please

> 1. Is that reginout with its so called optimization and make it go faster - claims running on the computer

I don't have any reginout software on the computer.

> 2. What is this program please

It's very similar to Process Explorer. I have that program too, but I'm more familiar with System Explorer & for all practical purposes they do the same things. See: http://systemexplorer.net

> 3. Which please
I have anti-virus & anti-malware programs running all the time

For quite a while I've been running Advanced System Care Ultimate which includes a "Real Time Protector" & IObit Malware Fighter. It's been @ least 10 years since I had a virus, trojan horse, etc. & I've never have had one on this machine. Periodically I run Malwayebytes & it's never turned up any malware.

Forgot to add that I have hibernate disabled. And that I'm experiencing just the opposite of this: "I would expect the CPU to be in high usage when waking up a system."

System Explorer puts a little computer screen in the taskbar which shows a graph of CPU usage -- when it's solid red CPU usage is @ 100%. Also, when you point your arrow @ that little screen it'll show you the top 5 programs which are using the most system resources. When I touch a key or move the mouse to wake the computer up & immediately point to that screen I see that it's solid red & that explorer.exe is what's causing 100% CPU usage.

And you can also see the CPU usage drop like a rock as the machine is "waking up" -- explorer.exe stops using a lot of the CPU & usage typically drops to around 6%. Then as I start programs & open files, the CPU & RAM goes up & down just as you'd expect it too -- no problems whatever while using the computer -- just after I put it to sleep I'll hear the cooling fan speed up to as fast as it'll go, which tells me the CPU has gone to 100%.

There are two topics running this one and the one linked to in my post 4., which I am helping with - I will leave the other topic, as two being worked together is pointless
The other topic is

Attached is the System Idle Process text file. Sorry for the earlier copy & paste of those results -- chalk it up to "brain fade".

Please test to see you experience the same issue after starting with a clean boot as follows. If it continues then test in safe mode.

I can see what are likely to be the reason why both problems exist

Multiple IObit processes running

Uninstall IOBIT and Kerish Doctor and I am pretty convinced all your problems will go away

Before uninstalling them reset any Tweaks or protection settings they have done to windows defaults

Uninstalling SecureAPlus did solve the other problem, but had no effect on this one. But after using diagnostic startup & then Services, going thru every process, disabling some, setting others to manual & leaving some on automatic, 1/2 of this problem appears to be solved.

When I put the computer to sleep, come back later, wake it up & immediately check System Explorer (or Process Explorer), explorer.exe is running, but CPU usage is low. But if I walk away from the computer & let the computer cycle thru my screen saver (after 10 minutes) & turn off hard drives (after 15 minutes) settings, CPU usage will still go to 100% & explorer.exe is using the vast majority of the CPU. I can see that by moving the mouse & immediately checking System Explorer (or Process Explorer).

It makes no sense to me that anything would run the CPU up to 100% when the hard drives aren't even running! And I have no idea what explorer.exe is doing after the screen saver comes on & the hard drives stop. But I usually put the computer to sleep when I'm going to be away for more than 10 minutes & now that seems to be working the way it should.

Thanks again for everyone's assistance.

Try changing your power plan to high power and see if it changes anything.
IMHO as seen on many occasions - both on this site and many others
This computer will never run smoothly until the system sorted out

IOBit is in use
I've been using Advanced System Care & related IObit programs for years & I like them enough to pay for them
KerishDoctor is installed

and SecureAplus was installed.

It will boost your computer's speed up to 50%. You will notice a marked acceleration in the speed of your computer and its response time.
Clean up to 500 MB of garbage per day. It's the most advanced way to clean your computer of all sorts of accumulated digital "trash".
Reduce the risk of crashes by up to 30%. Our system registry error correction and crash prevention system reduces the likelihood of problems.
IMHO it is a wonder that the system runs with any manner of efficiency

and trying to sort problems on such a system is a waste of time

That said ArtNJnr must do as he wishes.

That did it !!!

From time to time I've used different power plans, but this time I just selected High performance & charged the settings from one hour to 10 minutes -- turn off display, put computer to sleep, instead of me manually putting it to sleep as I had been.

I left System Explorer running so the moment I "woke up" the computer I could see what processes were running, how much CPU & RAM capacity in use & sure enough, both were very low. I've left the computer on continuously to see if the same thing happened every time I was away for more than 10 minutes then woke the machine back up again & yes, now it's doing the same thing every time -- CPU use around 6%, RAM around 25%.

Thanks again to everyone who replied!

I uninstalled SecureAPlus & that solved my other problem, "A Required Privilege Is Not Held By the Client (Windows 7). Apparently that program was treating every downloaded program as "dangerous" & since I uninstalled it I've been able to install the programs that were blocked.

There are a couple IOBit programs I really like (Advanced System Care & SmartRAM), and Kerish Doctor has never given me a problem. Those programs do what they're intended to do & use very little CPU or RAM.

The choice is yours, as it must be, the computer will never run as it should whilst you have them installed
The choice is yours, as it must be, the computer will never run as it should whilst you have them installed
You may very well know more about computers than I ever will, as a semi-retired mechanical / automotive / manufacturing engineer & that's fine.

I've been using computers daily for over 20 years & Lord willing I've learned a little something! But I most assuredly am not a programmer & have always sought out people who know more than I do about a particular problem. I think it's crucial to know what you don't know & to find someone who does know!

As you may have surmised, I've tried a number of programs to see if they do what they're advertised to do & of course many of 'em don't. But I keep the ones which do & am willing to pay for the full version if it's worth the price.

My Dell Windows 7 computer (Intel dual-core 3 Ghx CPU, 4 Mb RAM) is "ancient" compared to what's available now, but I don't download music videos, play computer games, or do anything else that requires the latest & greatest hardware & software. I deal with a lot of boring stuff like text documents, but I do a lot of research & my internet must work well.

The programs I've tried & have chosen to keep actually do work, or I wouldn't pay for them. Anyone may think a particular program is junk, but have they actually used it for a while?

Thanks again for all the responses to my problems, both of which I've marked "Solved" !!!
